site down

The web hosting company Heart Internet have disabled the site. Their incompetence has led them to conclude that a recent problem with the site must be due to a design flaw in the scripts which generate the dynamic content. The site has existed for many years and has been hosted by Heart for over a year. Now Heart Internet, after all this time, claim to have discovered a problem with the scripts - after all how can Heart be the cause of the problem.

I am now looking for a new web hosting company but it may take some time to get a replacement site up and running.

Palettes constructed by the palette constructor can now be applied to the fractal image index.

After selecting the palette range colours click 'show palette' and then take the link just below the displayed palette strip.

At last the palette constructor has been created. This is a first draft. It lets you create a palette and shows some sample images using it. The idea is eventually to allow you to apply your palettes to any of the fractal image files held on the site.

The constructor uses the 140 colours defined in CSS Color Module Level 3
extended color keywords list. These are usd to define the start and end of colour ranges to create a palette that will normally contain 256 colours. For example black-red-white will create a sequence of colours shading from black through to red and then to white. the sequence black-darkred-red-pink-white should create a similar sequence but the two palettes will not be identical.

A new feature has been added to the site, the Fractal Image Index. This is a one page list of links for all those images which are at least 40,000 pixels (200x200) in size.

This blog describes the progress of the qkxyq.com web site holding thousands, or is it millions?, of images of computer generated art constructed using mathematical algorithms relating to the creation of fractal sets.

The site was begun 3 years ago. (Although the history of qkxyq.com as a web site doing other things goes back further than this.) From some time in October 2007 work on the site was stopped and did not resume until June 2009. Since then a lot of work has been accomplished but there is still a lot more to do.

There are now over 2500 image files (in a custom format) on the site. Each image file  can produce innumerable PNG files with different colour schemes - that is where the 'millions' comes in. GIF and JPEG files can also be produced. These are the files you see on the web pages.
